Mottingham is a district of south London, England; located at the convergence of the London Borough of Bromley, the London Borough of Lewisham and the London Borough of Greenwich. It is situated 9 miles (14.5 km) southeast of Charing Cross.

The first records of Mottingham is from 862 AD when it was registered as Modingahema, which means earth people Moda and is generally interpreted as - "the place proud".

Mottingham was originally a village in the parish of Eltham, Blackheath hundred in Kent. In 1840 he was included in the district of the Metropolitan Police Metropolitan Police Act 1839. A year in the history of Mottingham was 1866, when the area was connected to the rail network with the construction of Mottingham station (then known as the Eltham station.) Also in 1866, Mottingham been separated from the civil status of the parish , therefore the separation of Eltham. In 1881, the parish had a population of 779 and covered an area of ??642 acres (2.60 km2).

When the London County Council was established in 1889, was excluded from the new county Mottingham and now formed a projection of Kent, on the edge of London to the west, north and east. From 1894 to 1934 he was a detached part of the rural district of Bromley. In 1931, the parish had a population of 2120. In 1934, the rural district and Mottingham civil parish was abolished and the area was transferred to Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District. In 1965, the district was abolished and the area was transferred from Kent to Greater London under the London Borough of Bromley. The boundary between Bromley and Greenwich, and between Bromley and Lewisham on Mottingham was adjusted in 1994.

The first church was St. Andrew's Church Mottingham on Court Road and was established in 1884, which further helped to establish as opposed to Mottingham Eltham. A local landmark is Eltham College, a private school founded in 1842 by the School of the London Missionary Society for Sons of Missionaries, who has moved to its present location in Mottingham in 1912. Cricket famous Dr WG Grace lived in retirement for several years in Mottingham and a blue plaque marks his residence, "Fairmount" in Mottingham Lane, where he died October 23, 1915. He was buried in Beckenham Crematorium.
